So I just bought a 1994 caddy Seville SLS with a Northstar engine.....I tried to start her and the battery was dead so I jumped her and she was fine for the day. I went to work later that day and when I was ready to go home she wouldn't start again....the lights came on but were dull and the window went down half way. my friend came and jumped me and she was fine...I went home and the next afternoon I couldn't get her to start again and this time it took forever to jump her....she kept making a ticking sound when we tried to start her up.....my friend tested the battery and the voltage was low and he said he isn't sure if it's the battery or the starter because of the ticking when I try to start her.....if anyone has any input I would greatly appreciate it....

Yes take the battery to a sears and have them PROPERLY test the battery. A battery could read 12 volts and be BAD. Your friend measuring the voltage has only looked at one aspect of the equasion, the other is the battery's ability to take a load. It might read 12 volts with NO LOAD, but 9 WITH A LOAD and be TOTALLY unable to turn the starter.

This is NOT your starter.

Get the battery FULLY checked out, have someone (sears) load test it, and then buy a good battery

Yeah, feel free to put in a NEW battery and make sure that your battery connections are good and clean and you should be alright. The ticking sound is the starter solenoid trying to catch but your battery is not putting out the required voltage to do so. You really should try to avoid jump starting these cars, the PCM's don't like it at all...

Thank you for the help....can you explain why all of a sudden this happened? I would run her atleast every three days or so just so she can run for a little bit....and then all of a sudden this just happened with the battery

Running the car for "a little bit" doesn't do any favors for your battery or charging system, if anything it's more damaging. Your car has a very slight draw(current draw) when left sitting for a period of 1-3 weeks can totally flatten your battery depending on the condition of it. Often dealerships that don't move similar cars disconnect the battery. If you plan on letting it sit around static for an unknown time disconnect it or install a battery maintainer as if it were in storage.

It could be many things, the battery could have been on the way out, but the prior owner drove it every day, you only driving it every three days may not be enough to keep it charged. Have it tested and you will know the answer

Batteries don't die slowly and give you warning like they used to. Today's batteries die in their sleep with no warning the way we all want to go.

BBF as you know when batteries fail they tend to indicate more than one problem....

Explain what you mean. To me when batteries fail, sometimes its just the battery, with a bad cell or short, refusing or incapable to take a charge
