Regal line will mean callbacks in 2011

About 600 laid-off General Motors workers will be called back early in 2011 when manufacture of the new Buick Regal begins in Oshawa, says Canadian Auto Workers Local 222 president Chris Buckley.

At the same time that this confirmation of the agreement made with GM in 2008 is being hailed as positive news for the auto industry in this part of the province, Buckley says the union is pushing for a second shift to be created now for the highly sought-after Camaro. There is currently only a day shift operating and overtime is required.

"Our logic is that with GM trying to win back customers... and demand for this hot product... why not put it in (customers') driveways as soon as possible," Buckley said.

Doing this now would put another 600 people back to work and put more of GM's hot model in the marketplace sooner -- a "win/win" for both the company and the union, Buckley said in an interview yesterday.

There are currently about 3,500 employed at the Oshawa GM plant where both the Camaro and the Impala are being built.
