What to do to my N*, to spice it up?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Im swapping my N* into my 94 sts. I want to free up some HP and TRQ. what can I do before dropping it back into my sts?

There is really nothing you can really do. To quote a Northstar Powertrain engineer that used to frequent this site, "all of the low hanging fruit has been picked". The place where some performance can be had is the exhaust. But the choke point in the exhaust is the front bank crossover.

While you have the engine out, check the HVAC plastic cover and heater pipes, and engine mounts

What should I do to the exhaust to get it flowing, and get the best out of it.

Simply changing the mufflers will help, but there is not much you can do with the front crossover, dropping a full size pipe below the carriage will create an obstruction for ground clearance.

As far as intakes, I am not sure if this is the case with a 94, but in some cases the PCM is placed in the air stream of the intake/filter box to cool it, changing the configuration to one that stops this cooling is detrimental to the PCM. We are not big fans of aftermarket filter arrangements, the stock box/filter arrangement flows plenty of air that is drawn in from OUTSIDE the hood, so its cool air

The 94 MIGHT have the PCM under the dash on the passenger side, I think it was moved in 96. But still, be careful with intakes that draw hot underhood heat and that use inferior oil soaked filter elements

Do some research, the 94 (OBD1), I believe MAY have the ability to use an aftermarket performance chip for the PCM
