Obama Orders Chevrolet and Dodge Out Of NASCAR

Recommended Posts

In a move sure to spark outrage, the White House announced today that GM and Chrysler must cease participation in NASCAR at the end of the 2009 season if they hope to receive any additional financial aid from the government. Companies around the globe—Honda and Audi, to name two—have drawn down racing operations, and NASCAR itself has already felt the pinch in the form of reduced team spending. A complete withdrawal from America’s premier racing series is expected to save more than $250 million between GM and Chrysler, a substantial amount considering the drastic measures being implemented elsewhere.

Does suggest the Auto Task force is going to be involved in day to day management of the formerly independent company.

Car and Driver magazine have pulled the story.

It was an April Fools joke by them that has now got way out of hand.

I apologize for posting it before I checked it out more.

When I saw it on their website... I thought it was legit.

[ESPN commentary blog]

After much heat, the magazine pulled the story from its Web site and issued an apology.

Too late. The prank already wasted the valuable time of people from NASCAR, GM and Chrysler who have spent the past year dealing with catastrophic layoffs and financial ruin during this time of crisis in the automotive industry.

This is not a time to make jokes about something so serious -- even on April Fools' Day.

Besides that, this wasn't even funny.

NASCAR officials wanted the media to ignore the prank, saying the publicity would only give the magazine the exposure it wanted. But the editors shouldn't get off that easy. Perhaps the joke should be turned on them.
