Additives on 100K Northstar?

I have a 2000 Seville STS with a Northstar with 106K miles. Runs perfectly & produces advertised fuel economy. I do not know the maintenance history pyror to 90K. I've done fuel filter, brakes ,transmission service, alignment, mobil 1 oil all its life. Any suggestions on second 100k maintenance issues, what about additives, Zmax specifically. Thanks, Bob Culliton

This is no way for you to benefit from any oil or fuel additive.

I've done fuel filter, brakes ,transmission service, alignment,...

Why the alignment? Was something bent?

Any suggestions on second 100k maintenance issues,....

Replace the water pump belt and the serpentine belt.

Replace the spark plugs.

Prepare to replace the battery.

Maintain the Dexcool coolant on a maximum interval of 5 years OR 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Many high-mileage owners drain and refresh coolant on a 3 year schedule.

Be thinking about your replacement options for the struts. A bouncy front suspension will be in your future.

Otherwise, happy motoring!

Change the coolant immediately and use the cooling supplement

Change the tranny fluid and filters use OEM parts

Flush the brake fluid

Flush the steering system

Clean the throttle body plate including the throat and rear of the plate

Clean the EGR valve, dont scratch it in the process, mine needs cleaning annually

Do not use injector cleaner

Do not use oil additives, tranny additives, coolant additives other than the GM cooling system supplement

Research what the WOT procedure is here and do it

Plugs, wires at 100K use AC Delco

If green coolant was EVER used, use a 2 year 24K mile change cycle, since you dont know the car, I would use that schedule

NEVER NEVER NEVER have the TRANNY flushed by a commercial machine

Check the heater pipes that wrap around the rear of the engine

Consider changing the heater hoses, upper and lower hose and by-pass hose, the two green hoses should be fine

Make sure the ignition wires stay away from the HVAC fan

I would recommend at least 1 possibly 2 additatives.

seems sulphur buildup on the fuel gauge can be prevented by adding a bottle of techron fuel system cleaner to your tank (K-Mart, Costco, WalMart etc.). A few people have had sporatic readings/ and I understand this fixes it without doing damage to your fuel pump. I even understand GM has their own version of Techron, and a bulletin was put out on it's recommendation. BBF is correct mentioning not adding fuel system cleaners, but this is the message boards agreed upon exception.

I personally use 6oz Marvel mystery oil in my fuel tank at many fill ups. I really hear it quiet down my engine, and the bottle mentions it helps prevent & clean carbon from the engine & lubricates the injectors. As BBF mentioned it's a good idea to perform WOTS to heep your rings clean - otherwise your car will "consume" oil.

not sure the 2000 modles were part of the recall, but just in case:

Make sure your fuel rail is stainless steel, and not that black plastic. there was a recall a few years back. seems as the plastic got old, it gets brittle, breaks, and causes engine fires.

Sorry winterset is correct, the Techron works great for keeping the fuel gage working properly.

Skip the serpentine belt - this engine has camshaft chains, not belts.

The serp. belt is the accessory belt.

I'd say, if you have 100,000 miles on your car, using the fuel that you are using, regardless of brand, and you DON'T have fuel guage issues, then you can skip the Techron.

All gasolines have additives of one kind or another already installed, all are certified by the USEPA to be effective in reducing carbon build up on intake valves. Some types may do a little more. Sticking to a major brand fuel is a wise choice.

Most over the counter gasoline additives are very effective at seperating your money from your pocket.

Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.

Oh yah. I dunno what I was thinking. I saw "serpentine" and thought "timing".

Has any one hear tried Sea Foam? i dont know if it works with these northstar's "im a first time cadillac owner"But in many other cars i have owned it works great. In the gas tank,in the crank case for about 50 miles before oil change about every 3 or for oil changes and once every 20k threw the break booster line. When putting it in threw the brake booster line "look up[ the procedure" it will smoke VERY bad for a few min but it really cleans it out well.

Not necesary and not recommended, and it actually created big problems for one member here

I remember a lengthy thread I had with a guy on the other site. He had nothing but problems after using it. I don't recall much about it other than other than it ran like do do after using it and we chased everything trying to figure it out. Drove me nuts. I'd say leave the snake oil on the shelf.

I did a search and could not find the thread, it was a long term member, maybe EGREEN, but someone used it and then started using oil badly and needed to replace his engine

Ah thank you. i'll read threw it. like i said i dont know anything much about these N*'s. only thing i could think would happen is if the gunk build up in his crank case ect was sealing up any leaks, and of course sea foam will remoave all that. But i know in all the other motors i have used it on "2005 montecarlo ls,1994 Z28,1997 mazda truck,1992 f150 5.0" it has done wonders. my step father even puts it in the lawn mowers, bulldozers, backhoes, skidders ect with great effect.Even his chain saws lol. iv seen it free up lifters improve MPG ect. We had a lawn mower that was burning threw more oil than gas. iirc it was useing 7 q of oil when mowing our yard "very large yard". he dumped a whole bottle in the crank case and gas tank. it cut the oil consumption down to iirc 2q. But like i said i dont know how it may effect these N*'s. from what iv read they are a little def than what im used to. all aluminum ect.

"BUT I forgot to factor into the equation the OTHER undesirable effect of the treatment...the wholesale cleaning of the crankcase! Now, even thought the lifter has quieted down a bit, the case half has started leaking very heavily. The Seaform cleaned away all the deposits that was keeping the motor from leaking."

yea thats what i figured may have happend. I have read some troubling things about the seals in these N*'s. But like i said it does work at what its suppose to do, that is clean out the motor lol. I guess you just haveto have good seals in your motor to use this stuff ;). I think i'll skip it on the N*. As i dont want to be putting in a 5-6k$ moter in a car i only paid 8500$ for in the first place lol.
