I thought I would bring this up because some of you may experience the same issue.

I have a 2005 Cadillac CTS 3.6L with 70,000 miles, it was misfiring while I was on my way home from work.

After changing the spark plugs and doing everything else in my power to fix the problem, I finally brought to my local independent mechanic where they pulled the codes P0300, P0301,P0303,and P0305. Which basically means one whole bank of the engine was misfiring.

After doing a compression test and pulling the heads off they found 4 bent valves and 4 teeth sheared from the camshaft gear, so they sent it their machine shop to have the heads rebuilt.

While getting the parts ordered my mechanic ran across a Cadillac TSB describing this same issue in 2005-2007 models and Cadillac has put together a kit to fix this problem, which is essentially new fully loaded heads (camshafts, valves, etc.) and timing chains.

If someone is having a similar problem they may want to take a look at Cadillac's TSB# 4185 to see if they qualify.

As of right now Cadillac has done nothing for me and the only thing that their customer care has told me was to bring it to a dealer for diagnoses. I am assuming that they are going to tell me that there is nothing that they will do because the work was not preformed by them but I am prepared to take this as far as I can go.

The mechanic has saved all the parts and if anyone is interested I can post the pictures as soon as I get them back.

Is this car in warranty? Why didnt this car go back to Cadillac for a powertrain warranty repair?, isn't it 5 years or 100,000 miles?

How many miles are on it?

We recently discussed this someplace, I could not find it. If someone recalls the thread please post a link. It involves the timing chains if I recall.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just a quick update on this.

I had my mechanic send the heads out for diagnostic and to get a repair cost and the machine shop found that "trauma was caused by a design flaw in the heads and not oil starvation". There was not cam teeth missing (this was told to me wrong) but they found abnormal wear on the teeth caused by chain failure resulting in valve to piston contact and 11 bent valves and 2 broken exhaust guides. They also called Cadillac Service who confirmed that they have issues with this engine and suggested replacement of the heads with new and also suggest I called Cadillac to re-coup the cost. This has also been an issue on other GM models with the 3. 6L VVT engines

I will let you know the results with Cadillac.
