Navy Succeeds In Intercepting Non-Functioning Satellite

Recommended Posts

How cool is this? This action illustrates that IF we ever had an incoming meteor, we have the potential of destroying it. It also shows our adversaries our capabilities.

Navy Succeeds In Intercepting Non-Functioning Satellite

Story Number: NNS080220-19

Release Date: 2/20/2008 11:23:00 PM

From the Department of Defense

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- A network of land-, air-, sea- and spaced-based sensors confirms that the U.S. military intercepted a non-functioning National Reconnaissance Office satellite which was in its final orbits before entering the earth's atmosphere.

At approximately 10:26 p.m. EST, Feb. 20, a U.S. Navy AEGIS warship, USS Lake Erie (CG-70), fired a single modified tactical Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) hitting the satellite approximately 133 nautical miles over the Pacific Ocean as it traveled in space at more than 17,000 mph. USS Decatur (DDG-73) and USS Russell (DDG-59) were also part of the task force.

The objective was to rupture the fuel tank to dissipate the approximately 1,000 pounds of hydrazine, a hazardous fuel which could be harmful, before it entered into earth's atmosphere. Confirmation that the fuel tank has been fragmented should be available within 24 hours.

Due to the relatively low altitude of the satellite at the time of the engagement, debris will begin to re-enter the earth's atmosphere immediately. Nearly all of the debris will burn up on reentry within 24-48 hours and the remaining debris should re-enter within 40 days.

$74 million for that shot. Three missiles were modified at a cost of $10 million each. Yep, three. They wanted to be damned sure they took that thing out.

Okay, call me paranoid, but was there something more than meets the eye going on here?

Hydrazine my butt! This was a message. The only question is: to whom was it sent? And why?

Regards,

Warren

There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises

So much effort for such a small amount of hydrazine. That bird would be crammed full of bleeding edge technology.

And it's good practice.

I understand there are possibly other things at play here. I am more impressed with their ability to successfully shoot down an object doing 17,000 mph, I think its quite impressive for any reason. They didn't shoot three missles did they?, I was under the impression that they got it on the first shot.

So, we have crash landed the NEAR space craft on the asteroid EROS 160 million miles away and it continued to work to give us its composition and we shot down a moving object doing 17,000 miles an hour. Pretty impressive

I think that the other two were backup. A press release last week said that they figured an 80% chance on the first shot, and that they would shoot one, then evaluate what to do next. If the 80% figure is right for one missile, shooting three would get you to 99.2% probability of kill.

They figured that they had 1,000 pounds of hydrazine in a hardened spherical tank, probably located near the center of gravity of the satellite to keep the CG from moving as the tank emptied over the life of the satellite. The prospect of 1,000 pounds of hydrazine impacting in, say, Omaha or Dallas would not be a pretty sight.

As far as imaging technology hitting the ground with sufficient physical integrity to allow reverse engineering is slight. I would expect that any such satellite would be specifically designed so that all such hardware would vaporize on re-entry. That's not hard to do.

I think that hitting a large satellite in a circular orbit at 116 miles altitude is the simplest of fire control scenarios. The SM-3 is designed for aircraft and missiles that maneuver, so all that is required to hit such a sitting duck is enough fuel to get to altitude (probably by just replacing the warhead with more fuel) and minor reprogramming the guidance loop to accept the high velocity of the target.

This may be considered as a demonstration of principle with regard to hitting an asteroid that would hit the Earth the next time or two around the Sun. It does not address how we would achieve a warhead of sufficient strength to perturb the orbit to miss the Earth; I don't know where we are on that. The longer the lead time before impact, the lower the warhead-to-asteroid-mass ratio we need to use.

As far as who any message may be directed to, I can think of Iran, who is putting together a space program that may include spy satellites. I think we have diplomatic channels to Russia, China, and everyone else that might be interested in our capability to pop a satellite from any one of our guided missile cruisers or destroyers, and in any case intelligence capabilities of just about all nations except the terrorist states would make such a demonstration unnecessary. I really do think that the hydrazine tank is the threat.

They figured that they had 2,000 pounds of hydrazine in a hardened spherical tank, probably located near the center of gravity of the satellite to keep the CG from moving as the tank emptied over the life of the satellite. The prospect of 2,000 pounds of hydrazine impacting in, say, Omaha or Dallas would not be a pretty sight.

I read 1,000 lbs. of hydrazine. No matter. I hadn't considered that the tank was "hardened." That makes quite a difference.

Omaha is a pretty big place. Tehran is not. The possibilities might have been interesting . . . .

Mike's point, however, is well taken. Without regard to the cost, it was a neat piece of trajectory planning.

I still believe there was a message in there. 74 million reasons is why. Do you suppose China meant to send a message when it recently obliterated one of its own satellites? Please forgive the pun, but these things don't happen in a vacuum.

Paranoia aside, you sometimes need to read between the lines.

Warren

Yeah, I edited the 2,000 pounds to 1,000 pounds when I looked back at the articles. The tanks need some hardening to withstand the bombardment of small debris orbiting down like a low-intensity sandstorm. That, and its central location in a 5,000 pound satellite, is quite possibly enough to ensure that it could make it to the ground with a lot of hydrazine still in one place.

We had no control of where it was coming down, and it turned out to be North America. If it had turned out to be, say, the North Pacific, we probably would have done nothing except tell the ships out there to "look up." Any land mass is a problem.

Some years ago the Russians had a nuclear powered satellite come down in Canada, spreading small reactor debris over quite an area. It wasn't a pretty sight, but no one was hurt at the time. Even so, if that happened today, I suspect that the Russians would shoot at it to fragment the reactor so that the radioactive debris would be too dispersed to matter.

The Chinese are still making noises about the satellite shoot. Thus, the satellite shoot demonstrably did have an international impact as a demonstration of capability. If this was intentional and not just an unavoidable side-effect of doing what we had to do, I don't know. As I said earlier, I don't think that we want or need to threaten the Chinese with ASAT technology. And, again, the Iranians are another matter.

WOW! Sandstorms in outer space ?!? Asimov and the "billions and billions" guy would have loved it. :D :D :D

Too bad they aren't with us today.

Okay, I've been giving it some thought. I can't imagine the recipient of that message being any entity other than Iran.

The question, of course, is what was the message? And why now?

I would guess that the message is "Don't wake up the bear."

Strange things are happening "over there."

The Syrians barely let out a whimper when Israel launched a stunning attack deep in the heart of Syria this past September.

Why so quiet? The silence was deafening.

EDIT: The Syrians employ the same air defense system as do the Iranians. That unanswered Israeli air raid took advantage of some interesting U.S. technology. I'm guessing the Iranians took careful note.

I was thinking today, my daughter is 10, when I was nine John Glenn was the third American to fly in space and the first American to orbit the Earth, aboard Friendship 7 in 1962.

In the last two years, we have landed on an asteroid 160 million miles away

NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft captured this image on January 14, 2008, during its closest approach to Mercury. The image reveals a variety of intriguing surface features, including craters as small as 300 yards across.

Build a Space Station,

The last shuttle mission lasted 13 days and comprised 5.3 million miles. Eyharts remained aboard the space station, replacing Expedition 16 Flight Engineer Dan Tani, who returned to Earth on Atlantis after nearly four months on the station. Eyharts will return on shuttle Endeavour's STS-123 mission, currently targeted for launch on March 11, 2008. Tani's mother passed away while he was in space.

We are so ho hum as a nation, these days, even this thread didn't draw any interest, no wows, etc. Maybe we are all too busy diagnosing earth bound PCM codes, to care  I remember being on the EDGE of my seat with my Dad, watching Glenn's 'historic' 3 orbits of the earth...

On July 20th, 1969 Neil A. Armstrong of the Apollo 11 mission became the first human to set foot on the surface of our moon.

That day I borrowed a color television from my workplace and set it up in my parents garage. All our neighbors gathered about a keg of beer to watch that historic event. These days, if you mention to someone that the Shuttle is currently in orbit, they'll likely say, "Oh, really? I didn't know that."

Yes, I suppose we are jaded.
