Clearing "Battery Not Charging" message

Terminus

Recommended Posts

I just had the alternator replaced on my Pops 97 Deville, but the "Battery Not Charging" message has not gone away. All readings done with a meter seem to be within normal parameters, so I'm not sure why the message is still on.

Help?

Where did you get the alternator? Some aftermarket alternators elicit an F terminal code. Since you installed the alternator the battery was disconnected. My guess is this is related to an aftermarket alternator.

Check and post your codes, you must be setting a code. Mike

Any way to check the codes without a reader?

On the 97, YES. See this http://www.caddyinfo.com/readingcodes.html and this paragraph DTC display 1989-2000 and post your codes here, Mike

"IPC B1911 current" mean anything to you? I can't seem to clear it. Also, the idiot light for the battery is on, but there is indeed 14.5 or so volts at the battery with the car running.

As far as the alternator goes, I believe it was a Bosch unit that was installed.

I have seen this situation on this and other Cadillac boards several times over the years and if there has been a workaround posted, I missed it.

The problem seems to be; the alternator voltage regulator and the PCM must communicate. And with some (most?) aftermarket rebuilds, that comm. path is not available.

I do not have interconnect diagrams for the year/model of your Dad's car so I can't be more helpfull.

I am sorry I have been referring to this problem as an F terminal problem, more correctly its an L terminal problem. Jim is right, the voltage regulator does not communicate with the PCM, remove it and replace it with an AC DELCO rebuilt unit. Good Luck
