I was coming home on the Long Island Rail Road tonight reading the New York Post. Low and behold I turn the page and I CRACK UP laughing and think to myself GOTCHA MARIKA!!!! Like I said, YOU CAN KEEP NEW YORK! This article could NOT be more timely! Scottsdale here I come!:lol: I HATE being right all the time!

NYC DIABETES EPIDEMIC ROCKS CITY WITH $500M PRICE TAG

By MAGGIE HABERMAN

July 25, 2007 -- The city's diabetes epidemic is taking a massive toll, with hospital costs at nearly a half-billion dollars a year and the death rate up a shocking 75 percent since the 1990s, a new report shows.

The report from the city Health Department, made public yesterday, reveals that roughly 700,000 residents have diabetes - with some 200,000 of them yet to be diagnosed.

And the cost of hospitalizations in 2003 was $481 million, almost double the $242 million price tag in 1990, according to the report - with New York City victims hospitalized at an almost 80 percent higher rate than people nationwide.

Fighting diabetes, an illness involving high levels of blood glucose, has been a priority of the Bloomberg administration.

"Diabetes is not only hurting our health, it's hurting our wallets," said Health Commissioner Dr. Tom Frieden.

"The rising cost of treating diabetes is an unsustainable burden on our health system and economy. But even worse, behind these statistics are tragic individual stories that challenge our city and our health system to respond."

Among other grim details of the report:

* The Greenwich Village area saw a 47 percent increase in diabetes deaths from 1994-1995 to 2002-2003.

* In the Rockaways section of Queens, there was an eye-popping 75 percent spike in the same time frame, while Canarsie in Brooklyn saw a 49 percent hike.

* The largest boroughwide percentage increases were in The Bronx and Queens, while Manhattan and Staten Island both saw diabetes death rates go down.

* Diabetes-related amputations skyrocketed by 19 percent from 1994 to 2003 in The Bronx, 6 percent in Brooklyn, 8 percent in Queens and 2 percent in Manhattan.

* The Bronx also saw hospitalizations increase 45 percent in that same period.

* From 2002 to 2004, the Mott Haven-Hunts Point section of The Bronx had the highest diabetes rate of any neighborhood, with 16.9 percent.

* Two Manhattan neighborhoods, the Upper East Side and Gramercy Park, had the lowest rates, at 3.1 percent and 1.7 percent respectively.

* The rate of any type of diabetes among women carrying babies went up 47 percent from 1990 to 2003.

The illness disproportionately affects blacks and Hispanics. In fact, Hispanics have seen a 169 percent increase in diabetes-related deaths since 1990.

The study also found that cigarette smoking increases the risk of diabetes, and that poorer people have a more difficult time managing the disease - which can't be cured but can be minimized through diet, exercise and lifestyle choices.

The report was produced using statistics culled from several sources, including a community health survey, and hospital, birth and death records.

Mike, let me help you with your luggage.

Millions of people in New York City, of course there's going to be diabetes and AIDS and everything else you could imagine. I still love New York and you can keep the kitty litter box.

Quick facts according to the census bureau:

Population of state of Arizona as of 2006: 6,166,318

Population of New York City as of 2003 (last figure posted): 8,085,742

Population of New York State as of 2006: 19,306,183

Diabetes in Arizona

In 2004 there were 279,964 people in Arizona, or 4.8% of the population.

You read the New York Post????

Yes, they'll be diabetics in New York City but it won't be caused by the weather.

Yes I am proud to say that I read the New York Post and listen to Rush Limbaugh and Hannity.

To quote a rag that you probably respect, the left listing New York Slimes, NYC is the EPICENTER for Diabetes!

There are 700,000 cases of diabetes in NYC now and it's rising, that is a lot and I am positive that its under counted as is the population. Given the size of NYC's population everything is out of kilder when you look at it as a % of total or per capita.

The statistic that CRACKS me UP is the Home Land Security funds that are given to NYC, on a per capita basis its so much LESS than say, Kansas City, SO WHAT, we get way more than any other municipality, to look at it on a per capita basis is idiotic. As a matter of fact, NYC gets $134 million the most in the country and a little less than twice as much as the second place recipient of funds, Los Angeles. http://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/grants_st-local_fy07.pdf Of course the outlets like CNN love to whine and cry about per capita:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/03/22/homesec.tm/

No to worry I drink 64 oz of water a day, I will take my chances, I also run out there to acclimate to the heat. Diabetes can be caused by being overweight and out of shape also, but a sign that you are dehydrated is very yellow urine, mine for the record is clear.... Report back your findings!

I think you need a psychiatrist.

That has been said before!

I think a beer would suffice. That can be administered at Hooters on Sunday, rain or shine. Weather.com predicts scattered thunderstorms with a 60% probability of precipitation. That means there's a 40% chance that a given spot will have no rain, and that the rains that do occur will be short-lived.

Sounds like words of wisdom to me. No excuses, everyone better show up on Sunday, rain or shine.

If you really want to make people safe drivers again then simply remove all the safety features from cars. No more seat belts, ABS brakes, traction control, air bags or stability control. No more anything. You'll see how quickly people will slow down and once again learn to drive like "normal" humans.

It will be 118 in Baghdad, with a low of 91 on Sunday, down from 119 on Saturday. And, yes, sunny-sunny-sunny.

At the very least, we should speaker-phone Bruce from Hooter's. Say, around 2pm-3pm when the buzz has begun? :D :D :D

Perhaps Bruce will provide a trusted member with his cell phone number? Or not.

Regards,

Warren

Sounds a good idea but it's up to Bruce of course. I'll volunteer to place the call to Bruce if he decides to go ahead with this.

We'll probably be on the beach, but I'll be there in spirit. I have internet on my phone, but it does not do video conferencing. It does have IM via AIM, MSN, or yahoo; AIM would be my preference out of those 3. And of course sms/text messaging.

How about if I just call your cellphone from Hooters and you'll be on speaker phone for everyone to hear and chime into the conversation?

Private Message me your phone number and pick a time and I'll make the call.

The last few posts you've made give me the impression you don't want to show up and if that's case, then don't show up. We'll understand.

What? No way. I'm the organizer of this thing. I'm there.

Don't think that at all. I have no idea why someone told me they closed and actually 2 people agreed with them ad said they heard the same thing. After posting I went to Hooters.com and investigated. Don't know.

I was just out with the dog and it's a beautiful day. As long as the haze burns off it's going to be nice and sunny.

I checked the Hooters web site and looked at the menu. I think the "closed" thing is what they call FUD -- false rumors encouraged by competitors or other ill-wishers. Remember the FUD about American cars -- nothing lasts past 80,000 miles (spread for the last 30 years), Pontiac is closing (1990 or so), etc.

It looks like we may be postponing this get together today. There are some members (according to Codewize) who are already canceling because they are seeing rain in their areas.

PLEASE CALL ME [PM for number] IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO ATTEND AND TRY TO CALL ASAP SO WE CAN GET A CLEAR PICTURE OF WHAT'S GOING ON.

ALSO CALL ME IF YOU ***WILL*** ATTEND.

IF I DON'T HEAR FROM ANYONE, I'LL ASSUME WE ARE POSTPONING.

I am working to provide an official call on this by 11:00 based on user input. If only 5 out of the original 10 people are going to show then I don't think it's worth it.

We currently have 2 members who will not show due to rain and a third who had a family emergency come up so that puts us down 3 right away.

It's up you you guys but lets make a decision. I personally think postponement is the best plan here.

Ok. Since I have a few people wanting to postpone AND that's what makes sense to me. That's what we'll do.
