  1. Have to give a shout-out to all the Cadillac Northstar owners who trust me to do great work and keeping me busy! Also to Bruce with the boat motor project that takes up the whole shop
  2. Hi - it has been a while. I have had very little time to think about car stuff lately - even Cadillac stuff. I got married, defended my PhD, got a job, bought a house (I finally have a garage ), and very recently became a father. I still have the '97 DeVille, but it is now in need of some major renovations. There is oil going into the coolant (luckily not the other way around), misfiring, increased fuel consumption, high carbon monoxide levels in the exhaust, coolant consumption and so on. I am guessing a blown head gasket - certainly not something "less bad" - either way the engine will have to come out of the car and be swapped or completely remanufactured. The car has 200000 miles on the odometer and the transaxle has shown some signs of aging, namely sporadically dropping and rising engine RPM:s when coasting in 3:rd gear (as if the transmission slipped, although only when coasting). Given the mileage and cost of R&R:ing the powertrain, I would change or have the transmission remanufactured as well if I did the engine, even if it was not showing any signs of strange behavior. At the moment, the car sits in my garage and I have not actively started planning for repairs. Although it would be way more complicated than anything I have ever done on the car before, I would still have liked to do the work myself, but there is simply no way I can see that happening in the foreseeable future since I will not have the time. I do not want a ten-year dismounted car project... Given that I live in Sweden, my options for remanufactured Northstar engines and transmissions are far more limited than for those of you that live in North America. I still do not know exactly what options are available. At least there is a shop that works on these cars in my area that I have used over the years for other things. Any thoughts, recommendations or ideas? /Jonas
  3. Get off the wagon people! I have been working on these cars for 20 PLUS years from the conception in 1993. I have not had any issues with timeserts let alone NORMS inserts and I am not the only one obviously using these inserts. They work period and with the thousand of head gaskets let alone hundred or so rebuilds i have done without any issues. LEAD DON'T FOLLOW....
  4. DIY timeserts

So I'm looking at a 2000 deville with the N☆. Ad says it has a slight overheating issue. Right way I'm suspecting a headgasket and I'm looking for cheaper way of repairing. I have full access to a machine shop and thinking about making my own timeserts. Anybody try this?
  5. Hello, I'm new but I have a 1997 Cadillac STS, recently I've had some issues with this car. But my issue now is that I think I have a blown head gasket. My serpentine belt has popped off several different times. Once when I was adding coolant to the car while I had it running. It gurgled the coolant out and all over my engine and caused the belt to pop off. Then a few days later it over heated on me and popped the belt off again. I need someone who knows about Cadillacs to tell me something besides a new head gasket which will cost me two arms and a leg. I've read several different articles but nothing to what I'm actually experiencing. LOOKING FOR SOME INSIGHT PLEASE. I'm not willing to give up on her yet. Thanks Duce
  6. I have a 98 Deville with a 4.6L v8 northstar. About a week ago, my car overheated. Let it cool down and turns out, all my water was gone! So, I found out that once the car gets up to running temp, pressure is pushing water out of the overflow tube, (there is only one reservoir with a tube right by the cap) untill there is no water left! Checked my oil, it's clean so I'm hoping it's not a faulty head gasket. But I think its weird that water is just coming right back out? Somebody please help me.. This car is the love of my life, but if I'm looking at over $3,000 in labor cause of a HG I think it's time to say goodbye. So someone please give me some good news!!! Also, it's not the thermostat. Just replaced that today.
  7. Hello, Cadillac owners and enthusiasts! I am in the process of doing a head gasket job and fixing up a 2000 DHS with 120k miles and a sunroof!. My ultimate goal is to repair it to like-new condition and sell it so someone can enjoy it instead of it heading for a scrap yard. Anyway, I have already done one head gasket job that proved to be fairly difficult because I was winging it. Now that I have the Time-Sert kit and the know-how, it's going a lot smoother. But, I was hoping I could get any constructive criticism, suggestions, or advice possible. Are Fel-Pro head gaskets of bad quality? I used Victor Reinz last time because I heard rumors of Fel-Pro being crappy. Just curious, Fel-Pro is a little cheaper. Ok, my next question is: Where do I find the heat camera for the front of the grill for the HUD? The previous owner had a minor fender-bender and replaced the whole dog house...the HUD no longer works because the camera is gone, is what I was told. Also, the whole doghouse is a darker colored red than the body. I think the body is Medium Red, although I don't know because I don't know where to find the paint code and how to look it up. I will have to figure that out and sand it down and spray at least the doghouse if not the whole car. Nobody wants multi colored vehicles. But it would be really cool if I could restore the HUD in the process. Ok...Now I have a list of DTC's and what I've done to repair them so far: B0159 - Outside Air Temperature Circuit Range/Performance -- The little sensor that is fastened to the hood-latch assembly was missing. I acquired a new one and I assume this was the reason it threw this code. B0189 - Solar Load Sensor #2 Circuit Range (sunload) -- I know this has something to do with the head lights. Maybe it's the dome-shaped sensor on the dash that's bad?? B0429 - Temperature Control #3 Rear Circuit Range/Performance -- From what I understand, this has something to do with the rear vent system and it not being exact...I'm not for sure, but I probably wont mess with this for another week 'til I get it all back together and find out if it isn't hot or isn't cold. B04626 - Ambient Light Sensor Circuit -- I have no idea what this one's about. C0660 - Level Control Exhaust Valve Malfunction (had Service Stability System light also) -- I replaced the air compressor with another one out of another DeVille with 90k and no stability system light. Hopefully this fixed this. B0026 - Left Front/Driver Frontal Deployment Loop (Single Stage or Stage 1) Open (also air bag light) -- Maybe just a loose connection? I've heard that there's a few wires in the steering column that can somehow get all funked up, too. B2860 - Telescope Position Sensor Range -- It has an electric tilt wheel. It over-slides and makes a clanking sound at the end of its rope but it does work. Have no idea how to fix this. I've looked around here and on the other big Cadillac forum a lot but never posted, so I decided I'd give it a go. A lot of these things I can figure out, I just wanted to get any helpful advice or suggestions that I could in my adventures. I'd post pictures but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. Thanks, JD
  8. I am new to the forum, I bought the most beautiful 95 El Dorado with 126k on it. I got a great deal on it and assumed that it has a blown head gasket. I am continuing to get bubbles into the overflow tank and of course it overheats after a short while. I did run the exhaust gas test blue liquid at the radiator over flow tank for several minutes and it never turns yellow. I am going to try this test again to make sure i did not contaminate the test. I have read that someone said something about a purge tube or something regarding the bubbles. Not sure where that is, but i will locate it. I did pull plugs and run the car and it seems like the bubbles did slow down when a few of the plugs were pulled. But it just does not add up that i don't see exhaust gases in the dye test. Thankful, but just don't understand these amazing motors. I come to the experts asking for advice on this beautiful car.
