  1. anyone know of a shop where I can tow or drive my 1996 to so I can have all the headgasket repairs properly performed on my Northstar? I have not started it in about 1 year, and when I did, the problem appeared to be much worse as a giant cloud engulfed the neighborhood. I shut it down as not to kill the cat, or gas the neighborhood dogs and children. lol
  2. I used to use storage mode for two months, but found it best to get a $30 “battery tender”. my car has been parked in the garage at home since November, and when I leave my Winter home and venture back to New Jersey in April, the car will start right up. deep cycling a conventional lead acid battery will kill it. I learned, and it is why I have an Optima battery in there too. Battery tender = money saver
  3. back in the early 2000’s, i drove my radio to a Delco/Delphi repair center where i gave them the head unit, and they cleared the vin out of it. the center was in Northern New Jersey. I found this site: https://www.specmo.com/services/repair-and-refurbishing-services I never used them, but this is the place you want to send your radio to so they unlock recycled head units. if you buy your shipping label, and return label on paypal, it is a lot cheaper.
  4. might want to drop the pan on the trans and check for metal, or check you do not have a blocked filter with clutch material. if you give it gas, and the engine revs, but the car does not move, it sounds like the bands are binding up. - in other words it sort of in drive and reverse at the same time. your reverse servo might be sticking causing the reverse band to stay engaged on the drum. but first work backwards and double check any other work that was done recently. btw, you wrote there are no brakes hanging - so i assume you checked each one, and each wheel is free?
  5. if the car is not starting, you should hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the key. if you do not hear the fuel pump, under the hood on the drivers side is an access that contains the fuel pump relay, and the a/c relay. they are the same and can be swapped to see if this fixes your fuel pump.
  6. Disconnect the ground terminal at the battery, count to 20, then connect it again. sometimes a component other than the radio that is on the cars data bus prevents the radio from working properly. historically this has fixed it. either way, let us know the results as this can help others with your issue/symptoms.
  7. ok. I already set aside $5000 for my headgasket job, and i wanted to know my options where to get the all the headbolts drilled out with all the proper heavy duty threads, seals, etc. done. I live in North New Jersey. I do not plan on taking the car in for repair till the late spring of 2021 which gives me plenty of time to gather up info. after the repair, the car will be assigned as a New Jersey - Florida driving car so i need to make sure I get all the repairs to bulletproof the car. I last took the car to Florida in 2015, and it currently has 120,000 miles on it, and it is 100% rust, scratch, and dent free inside, outside, and underneath. it drives, but is losing a little coolant out the exhaust when first started cold. It does not overheat and never did - even under heavy load driving for several hours. I believe the right thing is to have the engine properly repaired so it is reliable for long drives. the car never had any work done on it, and is mostly original. it is a very comfortable car for my family to drive straight down to Florida. it has been there about 4 or 5 times in it’s 24 years. THANKS
  8. thanks for the reply. it explains why i couldn't find anythink about a N* leaking coolant at the manifold. the throttle body you mention - would that be an internal or external coolant leak? how can i check it?
  9. I hope I find you all doing well..... My car never had any work done and i am the original owner new oem rad, hoses, oem surge tank back in 2015 as preventative measure coolant has been changed every 3-4 years with tablets in the lower hose been using the car only a little in the summer and fall months, and dry docked for the winters i had no problems this summer, but it did seem shakey when i first started it, and in 2020 i might have driven less that 1000 miles yesterday the “low coolant message” came on for the first time ever. today i spent the day starting it, it gets to 196 degrees like it always does, then i let it run, shut it down, and let it cool. rince repeat about 6 times. i might smell coolant in the exhaust, and it seems whiter than i recall. no visible leaks anywhere there is no pressure in the surge tank, and i actually have a second surge tank which is a small plastic bottle to collect the overflow from the surge tank hose on the cap - and that has been there for many years. it has been empty, and my surge tank was topped off today after all the starts, the surge tank dropped about 1” i suspect my intake manifold gaskets are leaking coolant into the intake? does this sound feasible? how tough is this job if it is? what do you all think? sorry i have been away for a long time, and i come back with a problem!! i just did my yearly oil change with diesel 15w40 the other day too. - the old oil was clean thanks.
  10. Before you open a door, roll down the window, and verify opening a door shuts off the circuit. Next step will be to leave the dome light on, and verify that after 15 minutes, the RAP (retained accessory power?) turns off the circuit. If the car has the obsolete onstar module in the trunk near the antenna, disconnect it.
  11. I bought 4 GM tps sensors on ebay a few months ago for 2 new alloy rims. This is for my 2014 ATS. I bought 4 new bridgestone run flats to replace the oem michelin runflats. The michelin had a 25,000 warranty and the bridgestone have a 50,000 warranty. I like the aggressive thread pattern on the bridgestones. Anywho, when i put the mounted and balanced wheels on the car with the new tps sensors installed on the new rims, i get "--" instead of a reading. Not sure if the sensors are incorrect for the car, or if the sensors need tombe registered for the car. I would think they would just report a number from where they are. Do the sensors need to be recognized by the car before they even can report a number?
  12. Looks good! Being a Buffalo car, have you ever considered brushing on a. Mixture of hot candle wax and hot grease to the underside of the car? I heard it works well to keep rust away. I myself use a mixture of transmission fluid, and motor oil in a spray bottle. also i purchased a bottle of at ATP AT-205 to apply on all my rubber hoses, grease cups, bushings, cvboots, etc.. I recently watched youtuber Scotty Killmer, and he said if you spray this stuff on these parts, it will rejuvinate them. And make them last longer. I got a bottle for $11 shipped to my house on eBay. I already use "303" on my belts, tires, and vinyl and plastic in the car. you and i put few miles on the car, so our tires will be with us for some time.
  13. I recently learned about a new type of coolant called HOAT. I tried to research it a little, but got lost. I was wondering if this compares to Dexcool? I was trying to figure out if Dexcool might transition over to this new coolant / if it were backward compatible / if anyone transitioned to it. I myself believe in only following the manufactures recommendation. for example, i upgraded my 1996 Cadillac, and my 2002 Chevy to Dexron vi (GM logo on the bottle) per GM recommendation for my 2014 ATS 2.0t now that my dealership oil changes are over, i have been using mobile1 dexos1 generation2 oil (it has the GM logo on the box) there is a long video on youtube that goes into why gen2 is so important for a specific gm engine, but will not disclose which one. I only suspect it is for the 4 cyl turbo and so i was sure to upgrade. i am still hanging in there with my 1996 And it's original head gaskets. Today being nice weather in the Northeast USA, i am thinking about taking my garage queen out for an oil change (my son will do it with me). Has not been driven since November, and has a trickle charger on it.
  14. I need some help on supplies for my beater car. What is the name of the caulking GM uses in the trunk to seal up body panels? I think it is a caulk and adhesive? Where is the best place online? to buy a quart of GM colormatched paint (if i give the paint code) I also need primer as i need to paint replacement rocker panels - I am looking for the paint and primer to have a hardener added into the paint gun that will give good protection. I learned that that duplicolor paintcan stuff washes right off the car, and provides no protection against rust. my project will involve caulking the underside where the new rocker is installed, primeing, then painting the rocker. if someone can recommend a site that will ship all the paint and list the solvents needed, it will be appreciated
  15. I had the same issue. Lots of info above that explains what is going on. I consider myself lucky that what i tried worked. I added a bottle of motor honey to the crankcase when i changed the oil. I now use regular plain old 10w30. My flicker and "STOP ENGINE" would happen after an acceleration, while i was stopped at a light. Giving a little throttle used to make the oil pressure light go off, then it got worse, and would not go off. I have a '96 Deville with 114k you can put motor honey in during an oil change, or if your crankcase is a little low. "Motor honey" can be found at most chain auto stores, or walmart etc. like stated above, please keep us informed. If you try this, i would be interested if it resolves your oil light flicker too.
  16. I purchased an electric HF orbital polisher for $69.99 a few months ago. I used it for all but my '96 deville. I almost bought an air polisher, but i happened to run into a detailer, and he gave convincing reasons to go with this. I purchased a glaze compound, and the polishing pads. It worked well. He really stressed that as a beginner it is very important to have an orbital, so we don't leave swirl marks.
  17. "Partially to fully obstructed by insulation" might mean some digging is in order with the given coordinates.
  18. I would not hesitate to use anything i mentioned above on interior plastic as well.
  19. I do not have any photos. The fading i was referring to was that yellow (looks like nicotine) discoloring that happens to old plastic appliances (computers, telephones, and plastic in cars like glove compartment, seatbelt hardware etc. in older cars). If you are talking about weathered black plastic, i found as seen on tv-"Detail Doctor" "instant restorer" works pretty good if you apply a light amount, then rub it in. I also use maguires tire shine on black exterior plastic trim. I think black plastic is alot easier to bring back to life than white or gray plastic because the black hides the yellowing. Also, if anyone has white rubber trim on their car, this peroxide method will probably turn it white again too. Btw, the detail doctor smells like a cake baking in the oven. Not sure how it got such an unusual smell. My kids always know when i use it.
  20. Yes, it can be do done. I recently learned that yellowed plastic of any color can be brought back to it's original color. In my online research it seems the best method would be to go to a beauty salon store and purchase 40% hydrogen peroxide cream. Att you have to do is brush the cream on the plastic, and either leave it in the sun, or put it under a UV light for a few minutes. This was developed to bring old computer casses, and keyboards back to looking new again. Other videos i watched showed testing on colored plastics. One point to remember is the difference between UV yellowing, and cooked plastic. Obviously this does not work on plastic that is cooked, and a little brittle. Hopefully someone with a classic caddy, and a discolored interior might find this helpful. Obviously testing it out on a sample, and removal of the plastic would be recommended to get he best and safest fix.
  21. Speaking of going down the road, it would really suck to be driving, and it comes off, and the car decides it wants to shift into reverse.
  22. If your mechanic is a friend then maybe an accident. But maybe this guy wanted to see your wallet again, so he loosened a clip so you go back to him in a few weeks.
  23. I am curious what the resistor bypasses? Is some function of the strut going to be lost with this setup?
  24. I am blown away. So when I am driving around, my 275 hp engines power is transferred to the wheels via a monstrous looking chain like a bicycle. Thanks for the enlightenment.
  25. Full service gas stations can be found anywhere in NJ - It's illegal to dispense your own gas in NJ. Also NY city has full service. I think you can dispense your own, but there is usually an attendant
